Dunnage Usage in Fulfillment Operations

Dunnage
Dunnage refers to the materials or components that are used to support, cushion, protect, or secure goods during transportation, handling, or storage. Packing materials, boxes, straps, air pillow, and cushioning are all types of dunnage used at various parts of the fulfillment process. Dunnage helps to prevent damage to materials and goods, which is especially important when working with fragile items.

How Dunnage Works and Types of Dunnage

Dunnage typically cushions goods within a container, which helps to prevent movement and shifting of the items, while also insulating against external shocks. Applying air pillows  or bubble wrap are classic examples of dunnage used in fulfillment operations, both of which provide a protective shock-absorbing layer around the products, while restricting movement within the enclosed packing container.

While bubble wrap and air pillows  are great examples, there are many different forms of dunnage that are used. Some common forms of dunnage include:

  • Packing paper
  • Cardboard
  • Packing peanuts
  • Plastic packaging
  • Styrofoam
  • Wood
  • Customized dunnage solutions

The specific types and applications of dunnage vary depending on the nature of the goods, the mode of transportation, and the packaging requirements. Cost and environmental considerations may also play a role in determining the type of dunnage used in a fulfillment operation.
